Essential oils are extracted from different parts of plants: flowers, twigs, leaves, stalks, resins, and roots and can be used in many different forms.
If you use the oils for aromatherapy purposes, seek out products made with pure natural oils as opposed to synthetic fragrances, which won't offer true therapeutic benefits. You can usually differentiate the natural oils from the synthetic by trusting your sense of smell.
When used in perfume or home fragrances, essential oils are extracted by steam distillation and balanced with other notes to create original scent. Aside from aromatherapy, you can also inhale essential oils to help clear sinus problems. When absorbed rather than inhaled, essential oils can also help to alleviate muscle pain, among other conditions.
